In Alanya, Şengül Kevkir continued her hunger strike on 8 October 2026, the second day of the protest she had launched in Hacet Square to secure treatment for her five-year-old son, Taha Miraç Kevkir, who suffers from SMA. Kevkir, who said she was consuming only water, stated that she would not leave the square until the campaign was completed.
The family reported that the fundraising campaign, which has been ongoing for approximately 1.5 years, has reached 46 per cent of its target, revealing that 65 million TL has been raised to date. Stating that Taha Miraç must receive treatment before he turns six, Şengül Kevkir said there are only two months left to achieve this.
Şengül Kevkir explained that she had begun a hunger strike because they had failed to receive the support they had hoped for, saying, “Having failed to achieve any results from our elders or those we wanted to make our voices heard by over the past one and a half years, I was forced to put my life on the line. I began my hunger strike yesterday. I will fight to the very end for my child. I am hoping for support from the people of Alanya.”
The mother, who spent the night at Hacet Square with her husband Fatih Kevkir, explained her decision to continue her protest, saying, “I will not leave this place until there is a result. I will carry on, no matter how long it takes.”
Providing information on the treatment timeline, Kevkir said, “Our child’s health is at stake. He needs to undergo this treatment before the age of six, and we have only two months left. So far, with the support of our community, we have raised 65 million TL. I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I now ask them to stand by us and continue to support us,” he said.
According to the family’s statement, the total amount required for the campaign has not yet been reached.
