The capacity of the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality’s Temporary Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre for Stray Animals has increased to 5,000 dogs and 700 cats in 2026. Operating on an 84,000-square-metre site in Antalya, the centre is staffed by a team of 105 people, including 22 veterinary surgeons.
According to information provided by the municipality, the centre oversees the entire process from the admission of sick, injured or vulnerable stray animals through to their treatment, rehabilitation and rehoming under suitable conditions. Animals receive vaccinations, neutering, surgery and other treatments as required.
Treatment is planned based on examination results
Animals brought to the centre first undergo a health check. In addition to rabies and combination vaccinations, tests are carried out for distemper, parvovirus and blood parasites. Based on the examination results, a treatment programme tailored to each animal’s needs is drawn up.
Animals requiring surgery are treated by veterinary surgeons in the centre’s operating theatres. Where necessary, orthopaedic operations and emergency surgical procedures are also carried out.
Health records are tracked via ear tags or microchips
The animals’ health records are kept on file via their ear tag or microchip numbers. These records include the area from which the animal was brought, the treatments administered and the procedures carried out during the process. Animal lovers can also follow the work being carried out at the centre.
The centre’s capacity, which stood at 1,300 dogs and 700 cats in 2023, has increased to 5,000 dogs and 700 cats by 2026 following the work carried out. Health checks, treatment, care and feeding are carried out by veterinary surgeons, veterinary health technicians and support staff.
Municipal teams also provide a mobile neutering service in the districts, reaching animals in different areas. In this way, veterinary services are extended to locations outside the shelter.
The centre is open to visitors every day
Members of the public can visit the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Temporary Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre for Stray Animals seven days a week between 14.00 and 16.00. Visitors can find out about the centre’s work, learn about the adoption process and meet the animals they wish to adopt.
